SINAMICS S120 Chassis units - System architecture

SINAMICS S120 separates intelligence and performance to allow the design of future-proof, modular solutions. A central control unit provides central drive control and implements the technological links. As all information required is stored in a central control unit, time-consuming transmission via a field bus has become superfluous. Through its axis grouping, each control unit makes available e.g. specifications regarding the speed and position for several power sections (motor modules).

Via its integrated PROFIBUS-DP interface, SINAMICS S120 can be connected to higher-level automation systems such as SIMATIC or SIMOTION. SIMOTION D in particular supports the implementation of fully drive-integrated motion control solutions.

The system architecture provides major benefits for the development of innovative machine concepts:

DRIVE-CLiQ, the uniform digital interface between the most important SINAMICS S120 drive components (incl. motors and encoders) reduces the number of different part types required.

Electronic rating plates in the components allow the automatic detection of all drive components via DRIVE-CLiQ cables. Manual data input upon commissioning or replacement is no longer necessary.
