PROFINET IO also allows safety-related signals (e.g. emergency-stop motor) to be exchanged between the ET 200 distributed IO and a SIMATIC S7-CPU. For some applications, wireless communication (IWLAN) is the more cost-effective solution. In some cases, it is the only option, e.g. for communication between mobile or difficult-to-access areas in an automation system. A new use case describes this solution. Many SIMATIC controllers, e.g. CPU 319-3 PN/DP, the PROFINET-CPUs of the S7-400, the new PROFINET-CPU of the ET 200S and the new SIMATIC S7 modular embedded controllers, now communicate by means of high-speed IRT (isochronous real time). High-speed communication is used predominantly in larger machines and process cells, if numerous nodes are interconnected on a linear basis with very short update times. Or if the same network is used for PROFINET communication and parallel standard communication, e.g. TCP/IP, with a high volume of data.
